New To The Craft.

School of Wood is a woodworking studio hosting woodworking classes for enrolled clients in Coburg Victoria at the NORM Maker Space.

In woodworking classes, participants will be taught how to safely use the machines and tools to handcraft beautiful furniture and other wooden items. Classes and project ideas can be tailored depending on the skill level of the clients who are attending and larger projects will be tackled as they upskill.

Coburg NORM Warehouse Beginner Woodworking Course

Over 10 consecutive Sundays (3 hours each), you'll gain the skills and knowledge to handcraft your own unique project under the guidance of expert instructors in a small group setting (4 students). No prior experience is necessary, just a passion for creating!

Master the Fundamentals: Learn how to safely use an array of woodworking machinery and hand tools. We'll guide you through the entire process, from selecting the perfect timber for your project to planning, designing, and bringing your chosen creation to life.

This comprehensive course equips you with essential skills like:

Here's what you need to know:

  • Open to Adults Only (18+): Due to safety regulations surrounding the machinery and tools used.

  • Course Schedule: 10 Sundays, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at NORM Warehouse, Coburg.

  • Limited Availability: Enroll now to secure your spot!

  • Bring Your Own Timber: We can even arrange a visit to a local timber yard to guide you through the selection process.

  • Everything Else Provided: You'll have access to a dedicated workbench with a vice, all necessary tools and equipment, consumables, and a limited range of finishing options. We encourage you to bring your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if preferred, although it will also be available during class.

Additional Information:

  • Shared Space: The NORM maker space will be shared with residents and casual makers during class hours.

  • Lathe & Carving: Usage of the wood lathe and wood carving are currently restricted.

  • Strict Cancellation Policy: No refunds are available.

  • NORM Space Access: Unless you have a separate casual pass from NORM, space usage is limited to class times.

Richmond Community Learning Centre Classes

Our Intermediate Working with Timber course utilises new tools, teaches new skills and works on new projects. The course will suit people who have done our Working with Timber course and want to build on the skills and knowledge they acquired.

As part of the course, you have the option to choose building one of two items:

  • Project 1: Round Table

  • Project 2: Side Table

 This practical Learn Local course will further develop your knowledge of working with tools (conventional tools, hand-held power tools, and some standalone power tools) and introduce new timber working techniques.

 Our experienced facilitator, Glenn Wimetal, founder of School of Wood, creates a safe, friendly, collaborative environment in the Burnley Backyard Workshed for you to learn and practice your new skills.

 The course is a great learning space for people who want to learn woodwork as a hobby or use it as a pathway to other training or employment options.

 A fantastic small group learning environment (only 6 people in the class).

Glenn Wimetal - Founder, School of Wood

Behind the School of Wood is Glenn our lead tutor who has been following his woodworking passion since he was a teenager. Glenn has a distant background in engineering and drafting where he founded the skills needed to bring his imagination onto paper and design. Glenn is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with beginners looking to start their woodworking journey. School of Wood values ethics and sustainability and these values are incorporated into everything which happens at the School of Wood. We prioritise safety for students and tutors making sure that it is front of mind at all times. The use of recycled materials is encouraged, however, it’s important to have it checked for metal before use in the studio.
