Learn Woodworking in Melbourne with School of Wood
Hosting Beginner-friendly classes in Coburg & Richmond to adults in Melbourne. School of Wood runs both Term-based learning and shorter set-project short courses lead by an experienced Instructor to guide the way.
Our term-based learning allows participants to custom design their own heirloom solid wood furniture items and through the course of a term brings them to life.
Also on offer is an array of Woodworking Short Courses (subject to availability) which offer short-form learning to participants who will focus on producing their own hand made wooden object.
Woodworking Classes
Over 9 consecutive Sundays (3.5 hours each), you'll gain the skills and knowledge to handcraft your own unique project under the guidance of expert instructors in a small group setting (4 students). No prior experience is necessary, just a passion for creating!
Learn how to safely use an array of woodworking machinery and hand tools. We'll guide you through the entire process, from selecting the perfect timber for your project to planning, designing, and bringing your chosen creation to life.
This course focuses on solid wood furniture making, and is perfect for anyone new to woodworking, or those who have limited prior experience and need some help to tackle their dream Solid Wood Furniture project.
Over a 10 week program running on Monday Evenings, this course will introduce participants to working with tools (conventional tools, hand-held power tools, and some stand-alone power tools) and working with timber. It will include lots of practice in a great learning space for people who want to learn woodwork as a hobby or looking for training and employment pathways in this field. Set among a class size of 7 participants in the dedicated Richmond studio ‘Burnley Backyard’, participants will gain end to end experience with designing their small-sized project, sourcing timber from stock or externally, fabricating components, assembly and finishing.

Create a Stunning Serving Board in Our Beginner-Friendly Woodworking Course!
Join School of Wood at the NORM Warehouse in Coburg for a hands-on woodworking experience! In this 3-week course, you’ll design and craft a unique serving board using a selection of pre-prepared timbers. Choose your arrangement, customize a handle (using templates or your own design), and select rounded or chamfered edging for a personalized touch. Held on Thursday evenings, each 3-hour session is perfect for beginners eager to explore woodworking and leave with a high-quality serving board.
About School of Wood
Founded in 2021 originally in Rye, School of Wood comes from small beginnings and has been dedicated to teaching beginners the art of woodworking through set-project and term-based learning courses.
Now operating in Coburg and Richmond in specialised woodworking spaces, School of Wood offers a variety of learning options.
Coburg - In Partnership with NORM Warehouse, Participants can use a full-sized furniture making space to craft their custom made furniture designs from start to finish.
Richmond - Run through the Richmond Neighborhood Center and partially funded by the Learn Local program, Participants can use the dedicated space to learn basics of Woodworking, and build their own small objects out of wood.
Behind the School of Wood is Glenn our lead tutor who has been following his woodworking passion since he was a teenager. Glenn has a distant background in engineering and drafting where he founded the skills needed to bring his imagination onto paper and design. Glenn is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with beginners looking to start their woodworking journey.
School of Wood values ethics and sustainability and these values are incorporated into everything which happens at the School of Wood. We prioritise safety for students and tutors making sure that it is front of mind at all times. The use of recycled materials is encouraged, however, it’s important to have it checked for metal before use in the studio.
